Ashtanga Yoga Corfu was founded by Melios Kontinis in September of 2013.
Melios was born in 1982 in Corfu island. He studied Economics and got a MSc in Enviromental Management. Occupied from his childhood with sports like soccer and cycling, he started seeking a different way of practice that, beyond the physical, aims also at the energy body. His first touch with Yoga was on May 2011, when he started practicing Satyananda and Sivananda by his first teacher and cousin, Angelina Kontini. On August of the same year, after attending a 3day workshop in Ashtanga Yoga by Angelika Anagnostou, he finally decides the method of practice he wants to be committed to in his daily life. By the end of November makes his first trip to India, so as to study with the Ashtanga Master Sharath Jois at the SHRI K. PATTABHI JOIS ASHTANGA YOGA INSTITUTE (KPJAYI). He then has the chance to practice under the guidance of many important teachers: More practices under the guidance of important teachers follow: classes with Mariella Papaioannou (certified teacher) at Mykonos island, workshop with Laruga Glaser (certified teacher) in Athens, retreat with David Garrigues (certified teacher) in Goa India, until March 2013 when he meets for first time Eleftheria Lagoudaki (authorized teacher level 1) at her Shala, OM Studio – Ashtanga Yoga Athens 2002, which turns out to be a milestone and since then he attains her workshops and visits her Studio every year.
Eleftheria and the practice under her guidance was a real revelation from the beginning. She has been and is still the source of inspiration that has not been found either in trips to India or in the workshops from time to time. Her approach, her teaching style and her overall attitude towards life played a role for a profound influence, which, as it turned out, laid Melios’ groundwork for teaching and mainly clarified the yoga landscape, placing it as an essential daily experience.
In September 2013, Melios starts teaching, Ashtanga Yoga Corfu is founded and he gets certified under Yoga Alliance in January 2013, after attaining a monthly Teacher Training Course in Florence, Italy. More Ashtanga-in-depth practices to come: classes with Elena De Martin (authorized teacher level 2) in Milan, again workshops with Angelika Anagnostou, Ty Landrum, Vairagya Ranko, but also with the legends of Ashtanga, David Swenson and Eddie Stern. In October 2019, he travels for second time to Mysore India to practice under the guidance of Sharath Jois at his brand new shala Sharath Yoga Centre.
